I have been trying to download the free copy of a bootable xp recovery console iso, for the last two hours!!! Have been to the main site and the Utube link and neither work, Had to even select a new browser, and after the browser dowloaded, the link back to the site was not there! So still didnt work.

In the past when I have tried to use the Recovery Console it asked me for the Administrator password. I have none so I just hit Enter and then it closes out. There is a separate Administrator account that is only visible when you go into Safe Mode. I wonder if one can set a password for that one and satisfy the Recovery Console that way. I don't want to assign a password to my normal account as user with administrator priviliges since then you gotta enter the pw at every startup. Have you tried starting the Recovery thingie and if so, how did you fix this password problem? Thanks to wannabe1 from Geeks to Go for this one.

This is a download of an.iso file of just the Recovery Console for XP. Burn to CD with Nero or other 'disc image' capable tool and boot. It looks just like the start of a normal XP CD, but will only offer the Recovery Console by pressing 'R.' All normal Recovery Console procedures can be run from this utility. But, just answering your question. If you go to 'Welcome' screen (where you see the user names, and you need click in the name) and hit Ctrl + Alt + Del 2 or 3 times, so it will open a 'dialog' box, asking for username and password, so, you can even type administrator and the password, or, your username and your password. If you want just change the password, you can right click in My Computer, go to manage, Local Users and Groups, Users, you will find administrator over there, right click and reset password. It will ask for a password, so, the user administrator will use this password that you type. DO NOT FORGET THE PASSOWORD, IF YOU NEED USE THE 'RECOVERY TOOL' FROM XP CD IT WILL ASK FOR THIS PASSWORD.

You can also install the Recovery Console to the C drive to have as a boot option, if you have or can borrow any XP CD, or if the XP installation files are on the hard disk. Click Start and Run.

If you're using an XP CD, insert it, and close the autorun program if it starts. Click Browse. To install from a CD, click the CD/DVD drive in the 'Look in' list. Otherwise, navigate to the drive and folder containing the XP installation files.

Double-click the i386 folder and double-click Winnt32.exe. The Run textbox should now contain X: I386 WINNT32.EXE o r X: path I386 WINNT32.EXE ( where X is the CD drive letter, or X: path is the hard disk location of the i386 folder).

Add a space at the end of the line and type /CMDCONS. Click OK and Yes, then OK when done. If you're not sure if the installation files are on the hard disk, click Start and Search. If Search doesn't open in Advanced mode, click 'All files and folders'.

Under 'Look in' select Local Hard Drvies. Type 'WINNT32.EXE' (include the quotes) under 'File name', and click Search.

Edited March 23, 2014 by TomGL2. A default Recovery Console setting denies access to several locations, such as the Documents and Settings folder and its subfolders. It is often the case that the user desperately needs just a few files stored in his user folder (in the Desktop or Documents folder), or in Shared Documents. Or, a misbehaving driver outside the Windows folder must be deleted in order to boot even in Safe mode (a problem I've had). The Recovery Console documentation mentions the Set AllowAllPaths = FALSE command, and this is responsible for the restriction. Logically, Set AllowAllPaths = TRUE allows access, but the Set command is itself disabled by default, so the setting can't be applied.

It is possible to enable the Set command ahead of time from within Windows. Log on as an administrator. Copy the following command (it's a single long wrapped line). Reg Add 'HKLM SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows NT CurrentVersion Setup RecoveryConsole' /V SetCommand /T REGDWORD /D 1 /F Click Start and Run, paste the command into the textbox, and click OK. Now, whenever you boot to the Recovery Console, you can enter Set AllowAllPaths = TRUE and access all drives. Note that case doesn't matter, but a space before and after = is required. By the way, files can be copied to and from a USB drive, even without the above command, although the sources and destinations will be pretty limited.

Which wasnt too smart. Its strange because I was running XP fine, have been so for a year, and no changes to any drivers or BIOS were made since last restart. Im on a lenovo SL500 laptop, my only other option is to download an XP disk image from somewhere, although im not sure how that will work out, and not sure if itd still have recovery console on it, in case its been repacked. Edited December 29, 2010 by tinoater. I chose the 'R' option - I got: 'Setup is starting'. And then 'Type EXIT to quit the Recovery Console and restart the computer' 'Setup is starting' should not be displayed when loading the recovery console. Normally when the RC opens, the existing XP installations are listed and you choose which to repair, then you're prompted for the Adminstrator account password. At that point 'Type EXIT to quit' is shown, and the command prompt opens (C:Windows).

That the installations aren't listed means that there are NO installations of XP on the hard disk, or they are damaged to the point that the RC doesn't recognize them. This suggests, at minimum, that the registry files are corrupted or missing, or that the drive is unreadable (or, again, that XP is simply not installed). Edited March 25, 2014 by TomGL2. I get to the R/console it ask, Which Windows installation would you like to log onto, then i click 1 then enter after that my pc hang Celemen, after you've selected the Windows installation, the RC determines whether it's XP.

If so, the RC reads the password for the Administrator account from the SAM file (part of the registry). Because the RC hangs at that point, I think the SAM file is damaged. Since Tips 'n Tricks isn't intended for troubleshooting, post to the User to User forum.
