I don't know about you guys but I'm sick and tired of BRP holding me hostage with their B.U.D.S system. I just installed the premium upgrade module that has the temp, compass, pass record/playback and time functions only to find out that my sled has to be hooked up to the B.U.D.S system to enable the clock function. So I get to pay another $70 on top of the $150 for the module?
Anyhow, I have a background in electronics as well as computer programming and if possible would like to start developing an open-source system that everyone can afford and use for themselves at home. That will require extensive reverse engineering and a lot of time and help from others. We would need techies of course, but also regular everyday people who would be willing to help capture the data exchange between their sleds and the real B.U.D.S system and report back. Anybody interested in helping with project like this? I would be happy to help out.
I would imagine that it cannot be a whole lot different than a OBDII code scanner for a vehicle. That code was once factory hidden, but is now available to the consumer, if they purchase a code reader, or even an app for your smartphone and a bluetooth adapter for the OBDII port will get you basic data wireless on your smartphone. If that company can do it with a Seadoo, then I would think a sled shouldnt be anymore different.

He has the code working for all Ski-doos except e-tec (the coding is almost done). He is the coder, it's coded in.NET.
I was able to marry my new cluster for my Sea-doo as well as program 2 extra keys (You have to merry new clusters as it's tied to the ECU). The base system ($399) comes with 4 licenses (each license is good for 1 VIN or HIN). After that you can buy more licenses for $37.50. The pro system is $1400 (unlimited VINs) Currently they are waiting for a dongle to power the MPEM on the sleds - as unlike the Sea-doos where it powers up when you put the key on. The sleds require a dongle to power the computer when the machine is off.

I'm not sure the e-tecs are like that, but my 2-stroke is. The only thing the CanDooPro can not do for legal reasons is upload new Flash programs to the computer. On the Sea-Doo I'm also able to change from Imperial to metric, enable depth sounder, enable VTS, reset super charger hours, reset last service date/who did it etc. Of course read past trouble codes. You can view tons of info as well. History of RPM ranges (# of minutes at each range).
The computer in the Sea-doo also stores the last 60 seconds of history. So far I'm VERY impressed with Tool (cables are VERY good quality) as well as the Software. Thanks for all your replies guys. I think as suggested that I will check out the candoopro tool when it's ready for ski-doo. I don't think there's much sense duplicating what's already been done.
Particularly one that seems so sophisticated. I also agree with supporting my local dealers and I do as often as possible but there are/were a couple of 'dandies' in my area who make it seem like they're doing me a favour by serving me. That I have a low tolerance for.
One has closed up shop and the other I suspect is on BRP's hit list as they are not meeting the 'platinum' standards for service. I'm going to try some different dealers in the Golden Horseshoe area to see if I can find one reasonably close who appreciates their customers.
GSXelent: Thanks for the tip on the CAN bus reader. That would otherwise be a great start. Do you know where you can get this harness? Nope, just needs to be built. You have to understand the field of work that I'm in.we are always building break out test boxes, harnesses for software programs from the laptop to the aircraft, etc.just needs to connect from RS port from the computer to the diagnostics plug on the machine, need power source to energize the ecm.
Now granted we do a lot of 'copying', rent a box for a week and build our own copy. But, the issue I think anyone is going to have is getting ahold of the software - I understand BRP is very strict with who has it and watches it very carefully. Sooner or later I'm sure it will surface, but wow it's already been 6 years.

It's nice to be able to shut the f.in maintenance light off and turn off the options I no longer use on my ski. A couple of things to consider: 1. The BUDS systems that are sold today are illegal, pirated versions of the dealer tool. If you are OK with buying a pirated, illegal system, well that is your choice. Are you OK with buying illegal software? If you own a 2016 model ski, or plan to buy a new ski 2017+ sometime in the future, be aware that the BUDS systems sold today won't work on the new skis from now on. BRP came out with a totally new version of BUDS, partially to stop the issue of the pirated, illegal systems being sold today.
So you are left with a boat anchor. There is no way for the pirates to let your system work with the new version of BUDS.
F.A.Q's I have read on forums its is illegal to have BUDS Diagnostics The first lesson here is not to listen to idiots on forums!!!!!!!!!! All this started with the the MPI (Multi Protocol Interface) in 2000 that was LEASED to the dealers and NOT sold to them, this whole 'illegal' thing stems from individuals 'obtaining” MPI units, they must have been stolen or purchased from a dealer who was not supposed to sell them, they are still the property of BRP as they were LEASED to the dealer!!!, even if you get hold of an MPI-1 it is useless unless you get our keys to unlock it!! Our MPI-2 units are Commercially available units and ARE NOT the property if BRP in any way How do we update the system for purchasers of our systems we provide the very latest BUDS software available, if any new versions are released by BRP we usually have them available to you for direct download from out site within a week Each new version of BUDS contains the very latest updates for each new model as applicable What are these 'Keys' or access codes that we need?? Keys/codes are required to 'unlock' the BUDS program, BRP requires that dealers unlock their diagnostic system every year, this is done deliberatly by BRP to control the dealer and is supposedly to make the system obsolete should it fall into the 'wrong hands”.
BRP also control the dealer by only giving 'Licence keys' wich unlock the part of the program that relates to the product they are allowed to sell/service, for example a Seadoo dealer cannot service a Can Am ATV, his system will not communicate with it!! (Sort of like the authorization numbers you use when you buy a new copy of Windows.) A hacker in the Ukraine figured out this scheme, and is providing these 'Megatech' keys all over the world. The fact that you can download the program openly means nothing, the use of these keys is illegal in every country. If you think this is not illegal, try using a keygen to crack Windows or some other program and start selling it, see how quickly you get arrested. There are so many of these pirates all over the world now, it is pointless for BRP to try to shut them all down. Instead, they came out with BUDS 2 which does not use a key system like the old BUDS and cannot be cracked in the same way.
So basically if you have one of these pirated system, not only are you breaking the law by simply buying and using it, like I said, it is useless for any new models BRP comes out with starting this year. I am looking around trying to gather info on this stuff to see if it's worth buying. My only issue I see with the cando is it's expensive. I'm looking at getting something that will work with my 2 skis my buddies skis. Not to mention the all the sleds in the group.
The cando would cost a arm and a leg to be functional with all those toys. It's definitely something to consider if I just used it at home.

Ok did not know this. I feel it's BS that sea doo tries to force us to use shop mechanics for fixing our toys. So as normally I wouldn't buy something pirated. I don't think the fact it's illegal will deter me any on this one.
