In his definitive book The Big Bands (Macmillan Company, 1967), George Simon succinctly describes Murphy's band as “an avant-garde outfit which. “The course is a system of horizontal composition based on equal intervals—an original method of creating and developing a new world of sound,” he noted in 1992.
Spud Murphy was certainly not a scam! He was a creative and gifted composer whose love of harmony led him to develop his own system of analysis. The bits that I looked at seemed rather specialized and parochial to me, but there is certainly great value in any course of study that asks you to look (listen) so deeply into harmony.

I know some of those on his 'EIS Graduates and Student List', and some of them are really marvelous composers/arrangers/improvisers, while some others are much less so. So I don't think the course will give you great facility with beautiful chord changes if you don't have innate talent.
